CARECEN (Central American Resource Center)
Volunteer Legal Document Translation
Beginning in 2019, I became a volunteer for CARECEN (Central American Resource Center) while I was living in Washington, DC. I spent about 15 hours per month translating all kinds of legal documents from Spanish to English, to assist immigrants in preparing their legal cases to gain legal permanent residence and, ultimately, citizenship.
This work required not only careful and accurate translation, but also an eye for visual design: these documents, including birth certificates, marriage licenses, and wills, needed to be formatted in such a way that the content was neatly organized, properly structured, and accessible. These documents frequently included stamps and different symbols from the clients' respective countries, which needed to be adequately translated and included on the English version as well.
Even though I'm no longer living in DC, I still translate as a remote volunteer for CARECEN as much as I can and plan to continue doing so for the foreseeable future.
